Marceline DESBORDES-VALMORE (1786–1859) Autograph POEM, “Elegy,” March 1822; 3¼ pages, in-4. A beautiful poem of 72 lines, lamenting the imprisonment of BÉRANGER (who had been sentenced to three months in prison at Sainte-Pélagie and a fine of 500 francs for his political songs). “What! Béranger! What! The friend of France, / The Anacreon of our stormy times, / With his resonant lute and courageous strains, / The beloved lover of youthful hope, / He is a prisoner!”… This poem was published anonymously in *Le Kaléidoscope* in 1827, and in November 1828 in *Le Mémorial de la Scarpe* under the title “Béranger” (unpublished), and included, under the title *La première captivité de Béranger*, in 1830 in the Boulland edition of *Poésies*.
