ENTRECASTEAUX (Antoine-Raymond-Joseph de BRUNI d')
Atlas of the voyage of Bruny-Dentrecasteaux, Rear Admiral of France, commanding the frigates La Recherche et l'Espérance, made by order of the government in 1791, 1792 and 1793. Published by order of His Majesty the Emperor and King, under the ministry of His Excellency Vice-Admiral Decrès [...] by C. F. Beautemps-Beaupré. Paris, at the Dépôt Général des Cartes et Plans de la Marine et des Colonies. 1807. A vol. grand in folio, marbled cardboard binding, dark green marble spine, title page, chart table, and 39 large plates of maps, plans and single and double views, drawn by the engineer C. F. Beautemps-Beaupré and engraved by E. Collin. Binding corners torn off, spine wear, stains, wetness and tears. In 1791, Louis XVI, worried about the fate of the La Pérouse expedition (1741-1788) of which he had no news, had two frigates in Brest in September 1791, La Recherche, commissioned by d'Entrecasteaux, and L'Espérance, entrusted to Huon de Kermadec. This expedition passed close to Vanikoro, where survivors of La Boussole and L 'Astrolabe certainly still lived. D'Entrecasteaux died off the coast of New Guinea in 1793. This voyage allowed the discovery of many unknown lands in Oceania and the Pacific Ocean.
