FROM A CARTON BY JEANNE THIL (1887-1968) & ATELIER PINTON FRÈRES À AUBUSSON Exotic evocation. Important tapestry in colored wool, circa 1950. Signed "Jeanne Thil" in the weft, lower left, with original bolduc on the back, indicating cartonnier, lissier and dimensions. 180 x 278 cm. Wear and tear. Provenance : Collection of Mr.C., a close friend of the artist. Then by descent. This tapestry is based on a work in the collections of the Musée des Beaux Arts de Calais. It is a retelling of an oriental scene, painted to decorate the waiting room of the first-class medical ward on the liner France. Eminently decorative, with an elegant graphic style, the artist is particularly interested in these men and women, their daily lives narrated like a fabulous story, with important architecture in the background. According to François Olland - Jeanne Thil's grand-nephew: "Her works are a call to that distant unknown, they draw the eye and make you want to project yourself there, that's their main aim".
