FRANCE, Second Republic. Manufacture Nationale de CHATELLERAULT. Marine officer's saber. Single-branch gilt brass hilt. Openwork top with leaves and a roped anchor supported by two French flags. Horn spindle with copper filigree. Straight blade with two cutting edges, two median gutters and four hollow sides, signed "Manuf.ure N.ale de Chatellerault" and dated "Juillet 1848". With two-ring steel scabbard (too long). Blade length: 85.4 cm. - Total length: 106 cm. - Scabbard length: 89.5 / 91 cm. As is. Wear to gilding, dents to plate and guard, cracks and missing spindle. Partially oxidized scabbard.
