Alfons MUCHA (1860-1939) - Lot 154
Alfons MUCHA (1860-1939) "Poetry", "Dance", "Painting" and "Music", suite of four prints on satin, deluxe edition of the "Les Arts" series, created in 1898. Signed in the plate and dated [18]98. H. 58.5 cm - L. 36 cm (as seen) - With frame: H. 68.5 cm - L. 46 cm. Slight stains and discolorations, the frame is certainly original. History: - This series was printed on vellum in an edition of 1,000 copies, with an additional 50 so-called deluxe copies printed on satin; at the time, this series cost 75 francs and that on vellum 30 francs. For the series celebrating The Arts, Mucha dispensed with the attributes usually used for these personifications, such as musical instruments, brushes and feathers. Instead, he emphasized the creative inspiration of natural beauty, giving each of the arts a circular backdrop featuring a motif from nature indicative of a particular time of day: for Dance, falling leaves in a morning breeze; for Painting, a red flower surrounded by rainbows in daylight; for Poetry, the evening star shining in the sky at twilight; for Music he chose birdsong at moonrise.
