School of Antonio Canal known as CANALETTO (Venice1697-id. ; - Lot 106
School of Antonio Canal known as CANALETTO (Venice1697-id. ; 1768) The Return of the Bucentaurus on Ascension Day. (Le Môle, seen from the basin of Saint-Marc). Oil on canvas. On reverse on stretcher and frame three stamps DOGANA DI FIRENZE / 24 GIU 15. 49.5 x 67 cm. Re-tooled; trace of an old small accident in the sky on the left. Frame in wood and gilded stucco with foliate scrolls. Gaps on the left. Related to the composition (Canvas; 77 x 126 cm) kept at Windsor Castle (Royal Collection), of which there are several replicas, some of them like the one in the Louvre with variations (Cf. Lionello Puppi, L'opera completa del Canaletto, no. 67, p. 95 - Milano 1968). Our composition can be compared with the various versions of the same theme by Giuseppe Bernardino Bison (1762 - 1844), who followed in Canaletto's footsteps.
