French school of the first third of the 19th century - Lot 11
French school of the first third of the 19th century Oval miniature of the presumed portrait of Etienne Giraudeau, in bust form, wearing a black frock coat, against a background of a red-draped column and a breakthrough in a wooded landscape. 1828. Signed CARRIER and dated lower left on the base of the column. Inscription on the back identifying the subject. Rectangular gilt bronze and brass frame with oval view. Miniature: 8.2 x 6.9 cm (view) - Frame: 10.1 x 9 cm. Minor crazing and lifting to the pictorial surface; some oxidation to the frame, suspension ring attached. Could this be Étienne Louis Giraudeau (Tours, 1776-1866), merchant, president of the Tours Commercial Court and French politician, who was mayor of Tours from 1828 to 1830? The date 1828, inscribed on this miniature, could correspond to the beginning of his term of office.
