School of Adam Frans van der MEULEN (Brussels 1632 - Paris 1690)
The Surrender of Marsal on September 1, 1663.
(Episode of the First Conquest of Louis XIV)
Gouache. Marouflé on panel.
On the reverse of the backing board an old annotation in pen and brown ink Reddition de marsal / Van der Meulen.
29.5 x 45.5 cm.
The original design by Charles Le Brun (1619 - 1690), based on a study of the landscape and town by A. F. van der Meulen (1632 - 1690), served as the model for the Manufacture des Gobelins (1677) tapisserie de basse lisse in wool, silk and gold thread, La réduction de Marsal par Louis XIV (Paris, Mobilier National).
The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes and the Musée du Mans have an early copy of the composition by Adam - Frans van der Meulen, to whom certain repetitions of the Reddition, or Réduction de Marsal, as it was then known, are attributed, either to him or to his workshop (Cf. Elisabeth Foucart - Walter, Le Mans, musée de Tessé. Peintures françaises du XVIIe siècle, n° 74, p.95 - RMN 1982).
