FRANCE, fin du XVIIIème siècle - époque révolutionnaire & po - Lot 100
FRANCE, fin du XVIIIème siècle - époque révolutionnaire & postérieure Composite artillery sword. Bronze hilt with spindle and pommel chased with a seadog protome, and straight molded cruise with rounded quillons. Branch missing, hole visible in the dog's mouth. Blade with two cutting edges, four wide hollow sides and two median ridges. Punch marks on the heel. With black leather scabbard with two brass fittings. Blade length: 50.5 cm - Total length: 66 cm. Worn hilt decoration; bumps; oxidized blade with a few patches of corrosion; cracks in scabbard leather, no bowl, shortened bolt, clevis without loop with weld remnants. The hilt with one branch is of the model 1792 horse artillery troop type, while the two-edged blade would make more of a naval artilleryman. The deletion of the branch brings this sword closer to the 1784 model for the Navy. The right cruise is common to both models.
