Hugo PRATT (1927-1995) - Lot 143
Hugo PRATT (1927-1995) Corto Maltese, Tome 2, Les Ethiopiques, part 4, Les hommes Léopards du Rufiji, first part of plate 19. Set in 1918, with the continuation of the First World War on African soil, and introducing the character of Cush, the Ethiopics series, consisting of four stories and following on from the Celtics, is strongly influenced by Hugo Pratt's taste for travel and his attraction to the African continent. He lived there (notably as a teenager) and traveled several times. In this panel, from the fourth story, Corto Maltese wakes up from a coma in the British army medical corps, after a tough confrontation and an encounter with the leopard men, Africa's vigilantes. It's worth noting that this story was also the last to appear in Pif Gadget, in issue no. 217 of April 25, 1973, before Pratt's collaboration with the magazine came to an end. It was subsequently published as a black-and-white album by Casterman in 1978. Pencil, Indian ink and felt pen on paper. Traces of scotch tape and partially insolated felt-tip sections. Phylacteries reproduced and affixed to the plate. Pencil drawing on verso. 25 x 37 cm. Provenance: Private collection.
