[MANUSCRIT] Composite collection of mystical spiritual texts and prayers relating to the Mass. GERSON (Jean), Orationes [ff. 1-41]. In Latin, decorated manuscript on parchment. Germany, Rhineland-Westphalia? or Netherlands, northeastern Netherlands, circa 1450-1475 (a date "Ao 50", probably "Anno [14]50" on the first endpaper, although it is not certain that this date is the date of copying of this manuscript). 140 ff, preceded and followed by 2 ff. of parchment, a priori complete [note the return of a leaf cut out between ff. 137v-138, certainly a cancelled leaf from the last quire?] (collation: i8, ii8, iii8, iv8, v8, vi8, vii8, viii8, ix8, x8, xi8, xii8, xiii8, xiv8, xv8, xvi10, xvii8, xviii4), signatures of the quires ("a" to "s"), littera textualis script, text on 22 lines, text justified between four lines drawn in ink (justification: 65 x 45 mm), some capitals highlighted in red, headings in red, some fly feet in red, initials painted in red (4 lines high), blue initials highlighted with red rouleur watermarked decoration introducing the major textual divisions, a larger initial 5 lines high at the beginning of the manuscript (fol. 1) with white ornament and red and green decoration, watermarked decoration extending into the left margin and into the lower and upper margins. Contemporary binding in brown calf over wood, cold-stamped decoration of fillets and small stars, bronze clasps, small rounded tabs attached to the outer margins, 4-nerved spine (upper head slightly dulled, leather spine cracked and split, some spalling, otherwise good overall condition). Louvain-style binding. Size: 110 x 78 mm - Binding size: 112 x 80 mm Provenance: 1. Manuscript copied and decorated in Germany or the northeastern Netherlands, on stylistic and paleographic grounds. This manuscript may have been composed in reaction to the spiritual movement known as "Devotio moderna", a religious renewal movement initiated in Deventer by Geert Groote (1340-1384). Geert Groote founded the Brothers and Sisters of the Common Life, a monastic organization whose members were representatives of this "modern devotion". Before his death, he asked his followers to become Augustinian canons. Rather than the personal prayer centered on Christ and the Gospels advocated by the Devotio Moderna, the Church insisted on a return to the sacraments, prescribing more Eucharistic devotion and more frequent celebration of Mass for monks, priests and bishops. Texts on the mass (Gerson, St. Jerome) suggest this avenue of research and identification. 2. Charles Harold St. John Hornby Collection (1867-1946), inscribed on the front of the second endpaper: "C.H. St. J. Hornby. Shelley House. Chelsea. March 1907". Charles Harold St. John Hornby was a printer, owner of Ashendene Press (London) and collector, having accumulated medieval and Renaissance manuscripts and precious incunabula and prints. Part of his collection was sold by Sotheby's (London, June 4, 1974). See Gewirtz, Isaac. " C. H. St. John Hornby", in Twentieth-Century British Book Collectors and Bibliographers: First Series, ed. W. Baker and K. Womack, 1999. 3. France, private collection. Text: * ff. 1-41, GERSON (Jean), Orationes, preceded by a rubric, Incipiunt orationes magistri Iohannis Gerson dicende ante et post missam..., incipit, " Domine Ihesu Criste sacerdos summe... ". Nicknamed "Doctor Christianissimus", Jean Gerson (1363-1429) was an important exponent of 15th-century mystical literature. Chancellor of Notre-Dame de Paris, i.e. the University of Paris (he replaced Pierre d'Ailly), he was at the heart of the debate on the Great Western Schism. Gerson bequeathed numerous writings on teaching, mystical theology, logic and preaching, such as the text in our manuscript. * ff. 41-41v, JERÔME (saint), Prayer to be said before Mass, rubric, "Oratio beati Iheronimini ante missam dicenda....", incipit, "Si tamen o clementissime pater...".
