D'après le modèle de la manufacture CORNELIUS & BAKER, à Phi - Lot 98
D'après le modèle de la manufacture CORNELIUS & BAKER, à Philadelphie, seconde moitié du XIXème siècle "Highlander". Cast zinc proof with two patinas. Unsigned. H. 40 cm. Original casting defects under the base, with brass blade for screwing onto the saddle. Patina wear; rifle tear above left hand. Mounted on a tripod saddle in black-stained wood with cast and patinated metal trim and chains. H. 85 cm. Wobbly, partially dented wood. This art zinc factory was founded in Philadelphia in 1853. This sculpture, which may have been inspired by a soldier of the 79th New York Volunteer Infantry, was often sold in pairs with a "Zouave", the uniform of the military companies stationed in Philadelphia. It appears in the factory's sales catalog from 1857 to 1878. [Cf. Carol A. Grissom, The Zinc Statuettes of Cornelius and Baker, article in University of Chicago Press, Winterthur Portfolio n°46, 2012, pp. 25-61].
