Pierre LOTI (1850-1923) - Lot 135
Pierre LOTI (1850-1923) Aubades. The work of Pen-Bron. - Yvonne Lescure. Meeting of 3 autograph manuscripts, one signed of 86 pages in-fol. and 44 pages of another hand, in a volume in-fol. half-bas. blue night rac. with corners (modern binding). I) The text "d'Aubades" has been incorporated in the book "Reflets sur la sombre route". II) The work of Pen-Bron. This text was the subject of an in-8 booklet printed in 1891 by Mame in Tours, then was included in " Le Livre de la Pitié et de la Mort "; traces of scotch. III) "Yvonne Lescure" IS THE UNDISCOVERED TEXT, THOUGH IT WAS LOST, OF A THEATER PLAY, written for the "divine" Julia Bartet. It was in 1950 that Samuel Loti-Viaud, while tidying up some papers, found a package containing this manuscript. It is a play in 5 acts, of which only 3 have been recovered : the 1st, 3rd and 5th acts, the 2nd and 4th do not appear. Some indications would rather suggest that this play was intended for Sarah Bernhardt, on August 31, 1895 Loti wrote "I am working in haste on the play promised to Sarah Bernhardt". - On September 6, 1895: "Today, finally on time, Sarah Bernhardt arrives, always young and exquisite... we have lunch... then in my study where she comes to sit, I read her the play and she declares herself delighted. - And on August 22, 1898 "I see that she (S.B.) does not want to let go of my play that I would prefer to bring to the French Theatre". Pierre Loti was not a man of the theater, but "Yvonne Lescure" brings the testimony of a work whose enchantment remains. With a l.a.s. from Samuel Viaud offering the manuscript of "Aubades", placed at the beginning of this collection.
