Charles MAURRAS (1868-1952) - Lot 124
Charles MAURRAS (1868-1952)
About 90 L.A.S., 1907-1952, to Marthe DAUDET "Pampille", and 5 autograph MANUSCRIPTS; about 420 pages in-8 or in-4, many headers of L'Action française, some envelopes.
Important and very interesting correspondence.
It is impossible to give a detail of these long friendly and intimate letters to "Madame and Pampille", where it is much question of Léon Daudet, of L'Action française and of the political situation, of his stays in Martigues, of literature, of the Daudet family (François is his godson [in 1940, he forwards a letter of François to his mother]). Pampille is one of the rare female writers of L'Action française. We will limit ourselves to quoting a few letters that will show their interest.
One of the very first: "I asked Léon Daudet to tell you how sensitive I was to the great sign of confidence and high (too high!) esteem that you were willing to give me last night, by expressing to me in their truth these strong, clear, severe, harsh impressions. It is not my place to give an opinion on the theater, which I do not know, but I do know that we have committed, and that I was the first to commit, in October, a serious fault, which engages my responsibility. A devoted friend of the Action française advised me very urgently to have a sort of family council, Lemaître, Bourget, Barrès, who would have been asked to give us a few hours of their time per year. Their experience would have enlightened us"...
January 1923 (after the assassination of Marius Plateau): "Plateau was goodness, even courage. But he could not have had the experience of your quivering thought and your sweet friendship as I did. I solemnly promise you to be wise, prudent, distrustful and if, by chance, I receive a bullet, to spit at once on the aggressor the seven that are in my browning"...
Long letters are written, from 1946, on sheets of notebook, from the prison of Riom, then from the central house of Clairvaux, and in 1951 from the Hôtel-Dieu of Troyes, then in 1952 from Saint-Symphorien-lès-Tours. The last one is dated August 27, 1952 (he will die on November 16): "As for the refusal of the appeal, thank you, dear Madame and Pampille, for all your kindnesses to me on this occasion. Yes, these people dare everything. They do not believe in their responsibility. Although the past does not prove them wrong, they could be wrong about the future, and that is our business. Excuse these threats of an octogenarian. After all, we have seen so many turns and returns!

(1 p. in-8); - Dialogue of the dead in verse, dated Riom 1945, where the Prince dialogues with François (6 p. in-4); 2 satirical poems "for Pampille": Le résistant catapultueux, fable-express (1947) and Mon amnistie (1948); the dedication to Mrs. Léon Daudet and her children of Blessed Pius X, savior of France (1952, with l. d'envoi de Jacques Maurras).
