Alphonse DAUDET (1840-1897) - Lot 47
Alphonse DAUDET (1840-1897) 46 L.A.S., [1870]-1880 and n.d., to his brother-in-law Léon ALLARD; ca. 80 pages in various sizes. Nice friendly and family correspondence, especially during the war of 1870. War of 1870. He says his concern for his "dear brother", begging him to give him frequent news... We will quote only one of these letters: "France is in danger. Ah! I would give a lot to be next to you. [...] Paris is in turmoil. I am very afraid for today. [...] the patriotic feeling suddenly pushed me, and I am in an extreme embarrassment. Caught by the leg with wife, child, crippled father... And if the Huns come through Belfort, go up through Dijon, Montereau, Sénart forest, have to leave Champrosay... all this is very serious. I have not slept for two nights"... Etc. Elsewhere, he talks about his work (especially at L'Arlésienne and L'Évangéliste), gives family news and stays in Champrosay (Julia's health, Léon starts Latin, Bébé [Lucien] trots in the garden), encourages Allard's literary career, evokes his cure in Royat, etc., etc. On a letter, he makes little Léon write; a letter is written in large part by Julia to her brother...
