Jean Paul LAURENS (1838-1921) - Lot 31
Jean Paul LAURENS (1838-1921) Man with his back to the wall, study for a decoration of the Hôtel de Ville de Paris. Oil on canvas. Monogrammed lower right. On the back of the frame a label with handwritten inscription "Jean Paul Laurens Etude pour la voute d'acier...". 41 x 27 cm. After the destruction of the Hôtel de Ville de Paris during the Commune, its reconstruction was undertaken in 1882. The interior decorations were given to the most renowned painters and sculptors of the late 19th century. The decoration of the Lobeau room located at the south-east corner was entrusted to the history painter Jean-Paul Laurens. The artist composed several large historical scenes intended to illustrate subjects drawn from the great events of French history. Our painting is a sketch or study for the 1891 panel of the Reception of Louis XVI at the Hôtel de Ville on July 17, 1789. It is one of the characters of the group of men stationed near the carriage that deposited the king.
