Oscar DOMINGUEZ (1906-1957) - Lot 142
Oscar DOMINGUEZ (1906-1957) Homage to Manolete. Oil on panel. Signed lower left. 14 x 22 cm. Provenance : Mrs. Myrtille Hugnet. A friend of Madame Myrtille Hugnet. A lithograph of the same subject in artist's proof, dedicated "To my dearest Myrtille, Dominguez" in the lower right corner. The Association for the Defense of Óscar Domínguez (Tenerife) has confirmed the authenticity of this work. A certificate will be given to the buyer. On August 29, 1947, the famous Spanish matador Manuel Rodrigues Sanches, known as "Manolete", was killed in the bullring by the bull "Islero". It was, on that day, a national drama that was played out but also the birth of a myth. He had revolutionized bullfighting, placing aesthetics at the forefront and inventing passes that are perpetuated. In 1955, the painter Dominguez executed a lithograph in homage to the famous bullfighter, with a composition identical to our painting and dedicated it to the wife of Georges Hugnet. The latter, a historian of the Dada movement and later a member of Surrealism in 1932, had worked with Dominguez on collages and automatic decals. Dominguez also illustrated two of his works. In "Homage to Manolete", the bull is represented in symmetry with the toreador. The energetic lines of the drawing, angular for the man and curvilinear for the animal, unify the two actors plastically. For the painter Domínguez, bullfighting is no longer the domination of one species over another, but the noble confrontation between two equals in condition.
