VALÉRY Paul (1871-1945). - Lot 209
VALÉRY Paul (1871-1945). L.A.S. "Paul Valéry", November 13, 1925, [to Monseigneur BAUDRILLART]; 2 pages in4 at his address 40, Rue de Villejust. On his candidacy for the French Academy in the chair of Anatole France. [Valéry was elected on November 19, 1925, by 17 votes in the fourth round. Baudrillart did not vote for him]. He explains the story of his "transmutation": knowing that several of his supporters would not be able to give him their vote if Émile MÂLE ran, Valéry was about to withdraw when he was told to change only his seat, two other seats being empty: "The seat of FRANCE remained. I had been objected to a while ago that Monsieur d'Haussonville's chair was not a chair I should ask for. Here I am in front of an essential man of letters' chair. It is true that the difference of talents and names is immense. 2 L.A.S. are attached: - [January 15, 1925 (2 p. in-12)], to an academician; - December 24, 1925, [to Monseigneur Honoré HALLE, auxiliary bishop of Montpellier] (2 p. in12), after his election (plus the autogr. minute of this letter with variants).
