ROSE Toussaint (1611-1701) secretary of Mazarin, then secretary of the cabinet of Louis XIV and his secretary of the hand. L.A.S. "Rose", Stenay August 1, 1657, to Jean CHAPELAIN, King's counselor, secretary general of the Navy; 2 pages in-4, address with red wax seals, one broken, the other on yellow silk lake (slight wetness, small lack with loss of some letters). Very rare letter as secretary to Mazarin. The letters of Mme de Vendôme and M. Matarel were returned to His Eminence, but Rose cannot tell the answer, only "to assure that I rendered to M. Matarel all the good service he could; which served him as an answer to me. With your permission, since I can only write with difficulty in my discomfort, I told his Excellency that M. Cartret would be in Paris. When there will be a little more security on the roads, she will let him know what he will have to do and perhaps send him to the place where she will then be. Attached is a P.S. on vellum: receipt of his wages (1200 livres) as secretary to the King's Cabinet for the year 1694. Plus a P.S. by Antoine PORTAIL Antoine (1675-1736, magistrate, first president at the Parliament of Paris, July 20, 1701 (6 p. ¼ in-fol.): partition of the succession of Toussaint ROSE, marquis of Coye, adviser of the King in his Councils, secretary of the cabinet of His Majesty and president in his Chamber of Accounts, and of his wife, lady Magdelaine de Villiers, ancestors of Dame Rose Magdelaine Rose, minor wife of Portail, the partition being made between the latter and the knight Louis Rose "aussy grandson heritier for half", with inventory of the crockery, silverware and linen... (plus a P.S. by his father, [1699], petition for justice against the parish priest of Chatou.
