RICHELIEU Armand-Jean du Plessis, cardinal... - Lot 182 - Drouot Estimations
RICHELIEU Armand-Jean du Plessis, cardinal de (1585-1642) the great statesman and minister of Louis XIII. Letter with autograph corrections, [November 26, 1632, to Claude de BULLION]; the letter is in the hand of his secretary Denis CHARPENTIER; 1 page in-fol. (small split at one fold). Rare minute corrected by the Cardinal, instructions to the Superintendent of Finances. [Richelieu had fallen seriously ill in Bordeaux]. "I do not want to delay any longer in telling you how great my illness has been but by the grace of God it is diminishing day by day. Tomorrow I will go to bed at Saugeon where I will stay until I am completely cured, which is why I am asking you to send a clerk from the extraordinary war office with money [to keep my company of light horses going for a month, and those crossed out by Richelieu who corrects : to make a monster for the companies of Mr. Cardal de La Valette, of the late Mr. Maral de Schomberg, and of the srs. de Cluy and de Beauregard, and together to give the order that you will judge necessary for the surcharge that one has accustomed to give them. You will know if it pleases the King if he wishes to reduce these 5 companies [he adds:] at this time to the number [to which all the others are crossed out by Richelieu who corrects:] that he planned at Thoulouse by your council, or if it pleases him to leave them on the basis of the effective people of which they are now composed, and you will let me know his will on this subject. [He adds:] Not knowing what changes the departure of Monsieur may have produced. I beg you to have the clerk leave the next day with the necessary money and orders and to believe me.
