PICARD Louis-Benoît (1769-1828) playwright,... - Lot 156 - Drouot Estimations
PICARD Louis-Benoît (1769-1828) playwright, actor and theater director [AF 1807, 13e f]. L.A.S. "Picard" as "director of the Empress' Theater" to NAPOLEON, with apostille signed "Nap" by NAPOLEON, Saint-Cloud June 24, 1806; 2 pages in-fol. with imperial eagle watermark and effigy of Napoleon Emperor of the French, King of Italy (portrait attached). The decree on the theaters states that the Théâtre de l'Impératrice will be transferred to the Odéon, as soon as the theatre is completed, and Picard, evoking the "dangers that a theatrical enterprise offers in this district", begs His Majesty to allow them to establish themselves temporarily in the theatre of the rue Favart. "The lease by virtue of which I enjoy the hall on rue de Louvois is about to expire. This hall has always been the envy of the Opera, and would indeed be very suitable for its rehearsals. [Sire, our transfer to the Odeon has brought anxiety to our hearts. The obtaining of the grace which I ask [] would prove that Your Majesty wants to continue us a benevolence which honoured us so much " NAPOLEON sends back the request to the Prefect of the Palace, J.-B. de Luçay, " to arrange this affair to the satisfaction of Picard ". 12 L.A.S. or P.A.S. and 3 L.S. or P.S., 1785-1824 (14 pages, various sizes) are enclosed. Recommendation to Maherault, professor at the central school of the Pantheon, of a young actor that M. de Cobentzel applauded in Rastadt. Notice of pension paid by the general direction of the Police (1814-1815); authorizations of payment to an embroiderer and to the theater's prompter (1816): acknowledgement of debt to bankers (1817). Promise to the composer Lemière de Corvey to attend as "judge" his opera La Fausse Croisade, 1824. Correspondence with the publisher Le Fort and his wife, request for help from the jurist Lambert, notice of a meeting between Gardel and the superintendent, etc.
