PELLISSON-FONTANIER Paul (1624-1693) historian... - Lot 155 - Drouot Estimations
PELLISSON-FONTANIER Paul (1624-1693) historian of the French Academy; clerk to the superintendent Fouquet, he shared his disgrace, and was imprisoned in the Bastille, before being appointed by Louis XIV his historiographer. L.A.S. " Pellisson Fontanier ", Saint-Germain en Laye November 20, 1670, to the bishop of Angers Henri ARNAULD; 3 pages in-8. On his abjuration of Protestantism and his conversion to Catholicism. "I begin with you, my lord, the answers I owe to those who have done me the honor of writing about my conversion. Until now, silence has seemed to me more appropriate to the feelings I should have about myself and the Grace of God. It is great on me in every way. It is a reason for both joy and fear, for what if I am not better in the good religion than in the bad? You have taken part in the joy, Monsignor, for which I am more appreciably obliged to you than I can tell you. Take part in the fear with the same charity and kindness. I still need your prayers, your vows, your holy and salutary sacrifices, and finally another conversion that will make me more agreeable to God than I am and will make me love him a lot after he has forgiven me a lot"... Attached is a L.A.S., Paris November 29, 1675; and an autograph MANUSCRIT (32 p. in-8): incomplete copy of the King's grand ordinance for criminal matters [registered by the Parliament of Paris August 26, 1670].
