MESMES Jean-Antoine III de, comte d'AVAUX (1661-1723) magist - Lot 148
MESMES Jean-Antoine III de, comte d'AVAUX (1661-1723) magistrate, first president of the Parlement de Paris (of the Académie française).
autograph manuscript of a speech, [late July 1714]; 4 1/4 pages in-fol.
Important speech to the Parliament concerning the affair of the "légitimés": the first president of the Parliament presents to the parliamentarians the edict of Marly. [By this edict of July 1714, Louis XIV made princes of the blood the sons he had had from Mme de Montespan, and who would take rank in the order of succession to the throne].
Last Sunday, he and the Attorney General were called to Marly to take orders from the King. They were introduced into his cabinet after his dinner: "Then the King did us the honor of telling us that he had resolved after very serious reflections to change the rank of Mr. Duke of MAINE and Mr. Count de TOULOUSE that his will was to equal it in all respects to that of the princes of the blood that he wanted them to be able to take their seats in Parliament at fifteen years of age like the princes of the blood, In a word, the Parliament would give them the same honors as the princes of the blood. In addition, "having carried these views further in case God in his anger took away all that we have left of legitimate prince of the august house of Bourbon, his intention was much more for the interest of the state than for the particular utility of the legitimate princes, than Mr. duc du Maine and his male children, Mr. le comte de Toulouse and his male children and their male descendants born in legitimate marriage were declared capable of succeeding to the Crown " The King declared that he considered this measure as a duty towards his subjects, to avoid troubles if the succession was not settled, and the precaution of repeating after the last of the princes of the blood " had persuaded him that he was not doing anyone any harm ".
Attached is a L.A.S. from his father Jean-Jacques III de MESMES, Count of AVAUX (1640-1688), in his capacity as Master of Ceremonies of the King's orders, to historiographer and genealogist Jean DU BOUCHET (1 1/2 pages in-4, address with broken red wax seal). "The King said yesterday at his bedtime that he would make my lord on the day of lan the only knight of the order and he asked me how many promotions there had been since the creation. I could not give him an exact account, but I would be grateful, sir, if you could tell me, and if you would be so kind as to distinguish them by date and by the places where they were made and by which kings. [If you have the list of the knights who are still alive you will oblige me to send it to me to see if it is in conformity with mine and if I do not forget any.
Plus 3 P.S. from the family of Mesmes d'Avaux 1658-1683).
