3 autograph MANUSCRITS, [ca. 1760?]; 28-page (plus a few blank ff.), 9 1/2-page and 6-page in-4 sewn notebook, with some erasures and corrections.
Formation des troupes, Notebook of reading notes from military writers, probably written as part of research for his Essai général de tactique (1772). It includes ancient Greeks: Thucydides, Onosander, Arrien, Polybius, Plutarch (Lives of Illustrious Men); the Roman tactician Vegetius, abundantly quoted; moderns such as Le Cointe (Commentaries on Xenophon's Retreat of the Ten Thousand, 1766), Field Marshal Count von Flemming ("German Soldier" [The Perfect German Soldier, in which the whole science of war is treated, 1726], much appreciated), De la désertion ("small in 12. 1766" [by M. D******]), Friedrich Spanheim (The Swedish Soldier), Marshal de Puységur ("Mémoires" [Art de la guerre par principes et par règles, 1748]), Baron de Bielfeld (Institutions politiques, 1760), Montecucculi, Abbé Raynal, Mémoires de l'Académie royale de chirurgie, etc. Here are a few entries: "The Greek army which made the siege of Troy was much less considerable than the poets have written. The ships of the Greeks were then only brigantines which always followed the courses and which did not carry more than fifty men. There were a thousand of them. It would thus have been one of our ordinary armies. But Homer has simplified everything. A poet is not a historian" (Thucydides). "The soldier is currently paid in France almost as he was in the time of Henry IV, although there is much more money in the kingdom [] There are no longer any wars except in France where deserters are punished by death" (De la désertion) Etc.
Memoire a lire dans la première seance de l'assemblée des inspecteurs de Cav[aleri]e, [1774]. Inaugural speech to be delivered in an assembly charged with discussing the means of perfecting the constitution and tactics of the cavalry
Political dispositions, [circa 1775?]: "The consent and the participation of Spain in the execution of the present plan are the first objects that must be taken care of. The failures that this nation has just suffered undoubtedly make this negotiation more difficult. [] The supply of Gibraltar, far from discouraging them from the enterprise which they have formed on this place, will perhaps attach them to it with more obstinacy " Etc.
Attached is an autograph MANUSCRIT with a plan of a "New method of arranging a brigade of 2016 men, in column, practiced by Gustavus Adolphus in his war in Germany, as Lord Rea, contemporary Swedish general, gave the plan to the public about the year 1631", with a key underneath identifying the various literate elements, and comments (1 1/2 pages large in-fol.); 2 pages of autograph notes; a fragment of a military manuscript in the hand of a copyist, with autograph corrections; a file of documents and manuscripts used by Guibert for his documentation, including a copy of a memorandum of June 23, 1775 on "the general dispositions to be made for Spain to favor by diversions the success of a descent into England.
