FLAUBERT Gustave (1821-1880).
3 L.A.S. "Gve Flaubert" and "G.", [1871-1873], to Philippe LEPARFAIT; 3 1/2 pages (blue paper), 4 pages (mourning), and 1 page in-8. To the adopted son of his friend Louis Bouilhet, whose works Flaubert wants to have performed and published. He also talks about the editions of his own works. [Philippe LEPARFAIT (1845-1909) was the natural son of Philippe de Chennevières, and of Léonie Leparfait, Louis Bouilhet's companion, who raised him as her son]. Wednesday morning [Paris, December 6, 1871]. On Mademoiselle Aïssé (which will be premiered on January 6, 1872 at the Odéon). "Be calm! Yes, they have a treaty for the revival of Ruy Blas on January 25. After inextricable dialogues, here is what was agreed 15 days ago between Chilly & me (there is no need to come back to it). We will play Aïssé anyway. Then, on January 20, we will lantern Father Hugo with the sets for 15 days, then I will go and make an approach to him to obtain another 15 days or a month. - Since then, as the D[irec]tion believes more and more in Aïssé, it is now in talks to rent the Salle des Italiens, where Aïssé would be continued while Ruy Blas would be performed. Don't worry. - One cannot stop a play until it has gone down to a certain number. We have before us the Society of Dramatic Authors, where Chilly, in connection with the revival of Ruy Blas, was shaken by Al. Dumas (last October). Finally, leave me alone. I do everything for the best. Far from pushing for the 1st I would like it to take place only after New Year's Day! I almost strangled (sic) the prompter at the Odeon on Sunday - & yesterday I thought I would faint from exhaustion at the rehearsal. I could die. But I'll be fine! My average number of letters per day is about ten. - I spent 1 ½ hours yesterday on the sets, it will be chic! [...] It is to us (at the Odeon) that Father H. could perhaps sue. But he will not dare. Sunday evening [Paris, January 12, 1873]. On the subject of the meeting of the commission for the monument to Louis Bouilhet, which must be convened: "It must be arranged so that as few people as possible are missing. It is thus a very Rouen affair"... He examined his treaties and those of Bouilhet with the notary Duplan: "My business is very simple. From January 1, 1973, I regain all my rights, except for L'Éd. sentimentale, which Lévy still owns for seven years. -But B.'s treaties are pitiful! There is nothing to do for Melænis! and his rights on Festons et astragales are subject to dispute"; the book is out of print, and Lévy announces that it is going to "make a complete edition of Mr Bouilhet's works" & then, that very evening I received a note from Troubat officially warning me that they were going to make a cheap edition of L'Éducat. sentimentale. - Mystery! Problem! Three newspapers announced the next appearance of St. Anthony! - What does that mean? In any case, Levy will be paid by me this week. You will be even with him. - After that, we'll see. Perhaps, - as it is a question, above all, of having a complete edition of B. - it would be better to call. [...] As for me, I am so disgusted with any publication that I have thanked Lachaud & Charpentier. - I could now sell Bovary & Salammbô. But the vomiting that such talks give me is too strong! - I only desire one thing : to die. I lack the energy to smash my face. Here is the secret of my existence. I am so indignant about everything that I sometimes have a heartbeat that makes me choke. - May the Gods preserve you from ever reaching that point!"... Sunday evening [Croisset, 3 August 1879]. "Lemerre wrote to me the day before yesterday that immediately after Salammbô (which he is printing) he is going to start on the complete Poésies of L. Bouilhet - so, that I send him Festons & Astragales, Melænis & Dernières Chansons. I have these three volumes only bound, they would be lost - and moreover would hinder the printers. - Can you remove them and send them immediately to Lemerre, or ask Billard to take care of the commission. That is urgent". Then he orders brandy and wines (Burgundy, Porto, Madeira, champagne .... Correspondence (Pléiade), t. IV, p. 428, 634 and 682.
