SARCEY Francisque (1827-1899). - Lot 206
SARCEY Francisque (1827-1899). L.A.S. "Francisque Sarcey" and autograph MANUSCRIT signed, 1864-1889; 1 page in-4 on the letterhead of the Petit Journal, and 5 and a half pages in-4. On the French Academy. December 10, 1864, [to Philarète CHASLES]. May God grant that he had the credit that is supposed to him. "I would appoint you, with all the public, to this Academy that you esteem more than it is worth, by deigning to present you there. It needs you, and I am surprised that you believe you need it. What can the title of academician add to your merit and your reputation? You aspire to go down. [...] You are dealing with stubborn old men, who have solved this very difficult problem of being perfectly unpopular by making opposition. The day the government strikes the Academy from the ranks of the living, we will all applaud; it will only get what it deserved. Notes of the week, [Le Temps, November 11, 1889 (press clipping attached)]. The succession of Émile AUGIER is open, but Sarcey has decided not to run for it. "I am not one of those who take pleasure in sifting through easy epigrams of the French Academy; I have never spoken of it except with deference and esteem"... If he does not present himself, it is not by indignity nor fear of the fight, but because his reputation of critic could be compromised if he was in this illustrious company where so many dramatic authors sit, like Dumas, Sardou, Feuillet, etc. "I have only one ambition: it is that on my tomb this legend is put which will summarize my life: Sarcey professor and journalist".
