LOTI Pierre (1850-1923) [AF 1891, 13e f].
2 L.A.S. "P. Loti" and "Pierre Loti", 1890-1891, to Philippe GILLE of the Figaro; 1 page in-12 with address and postmarks (telegram) and 2 pages in-8. On his candidacy to the Academy. [He will be elected on May 21, 1891]. [November 22, 1890]. Loti wishes to withdraw his candidacy: "On reflection, I am delighted that you had the good idea to tell the public the reason that makes me withdraw, and I thank you". However, he asks him not to make any reference to the other "gossip" they have discussed together: "I don't want to be defended and treat this with disdain and silence - it's not worth more. He adds: "Think of the arm movements, the dumbbells" "Formidable" September 3 [1891]. Thanks from the young academician for the few words that Gille published in the Figaro about his last book [Le Livre de la pitié et de la mort (1891)] Attached is a l.a.s. from Hector FRANCE, [May 26, 1891], who takes offense at Loti's election to the Academy: "why didn't you leave it to his 'Brother Yves'?"
