LA MESNARDIÈRE Hippolyte-Jules Pilet de (1610-1663) médecin, - Lot 116
LA MESNARDIÈRE Hippolyte-Jules Pilet de (1610-1663) médecin, poète et historien [AF 1655, 17e f]. L.A.S. "La Mesnardiere", [1658, to Cardinal MAZARIN]; 4 pages in-4. Rare letter protesting his devotion to Mazarin. "His Eminence having done me the honor of giving me to the King, I have always considered myself as his creature in the presence of His Mate," and he wanted no other protection than his own, as evidenced by the absence of intervention by any great man of the Court with H.E., in his present "misfortune." "My misfortune is of a strange nature, and I first hoped that H.E. would consider that in order to do me a wrong towards M. de R., it was necessary to violate the rights of civil society, by using against me what I thought of writing to a friend at his request, on the address he gave me. I have acknowledged my fault in good faith, and I have made amends to M. de R. which should soften his spirit, seeing that H.E. blamed me, He humbly asks forgiveness of H.E. for having displeased him, and if H.E. wants to give M. de R. the advantage in his House, "H.E. is the absolute mistress of my destiny in this, as in everything else; & I am ready to give him the resignation of the office" But if she wants to honor him with her protection, "after having calmed this storm", she will have in him a grateful and faithful servant, "in a place where there are cabals []. Be that as it may, being guilty neither towards Their Mates nor towards H.E., I dare to hope that she will not consent to the destruction of her work in my person, for the satisfaction of a private individual; & that she will still have the goodness to forgive me for the excessive ease of a pen which has written so many other things in several languages for the glory of H.E.'s happy & prudent administration. Provenance : former collection of René KERVILER (quoted by Raoul Bonnet). One page of the title page of La Poëtique is enclosed, with a dispatch a.s. For my very dear friend L'Illustre Monsieur Giry. By his very humble & very faithful serr Mesnardiere".
