LAMARTINE Alphonse de (1790-1869) [AF 1829, 7e f].
L.A.S. "Al. de Lamartine", château de Montculot October 20, 1829, to a duke; 3 pages in-4 (small cracks in the folds). Interesting letter about his candidacy for the Academy. [Lamartine is running for Pierre Daru's chair, against three competitors: Philippe de Ségur, Azaïs and David. Lamartine won on November 5, 1829 by 19 votes out of 33 voters]. Remembering the flattering welcome of the Duke and his benevolence towards him when he had presented himself in 1825, he allowed himself to hope again for the support of the Duke. But he has just learned that M. de SEGUR presents himself: being himself a great admirer of the latter, "if I had known his intentions I would not have put myself forward against a man of such beautiful talent, but my steps are made, it is too late to move back; M. de Ségur has the honor to be of your parents, if in the fight which will take place between M. de Bassano and me you will be able to support me. de Bassano and me you abandon me, if you even form a third party of which M. de Ségur would be the candidate, my election will be strongly compromised; and this election is the only one on which I can base a legitimate hope" Lamartine hopes that his correspondent will be able to favor M. de Ségur without however compromising his nomination. He hopes that his forced absence from Paris will not work against him: "I have sufficiently testified my strong desire to be admitted among men who, like you Mr. Duke, are the honor of their time and of their country".
