L.A.S. "Victor Hugo", February 26, 1840, to M. MARCHAL; 2 pages in-8, address (engraved portrait enclosed). On his failure at the French Academy. [Hugo has just lost the elections of February 20, 1840, to Molé and Flourens; he will be elected the following year]. "I do not complain, Sir, on the contrary, I thank the Academy. Never have my friends loved me more. This small injustice (if injustice there is) is worth a great sympathy to me" His letter touched him a lot, because his nobility pleased him: "You make beautiful verses. You have youth in your soul and gravity in your mind. Also your handshake is sweet and precious to me". Attached a L.A.S. "Victor Hugo", August 21, to a lady (3 pages in-8). In favor of Miss RIVIÈRE who was admitted to the institution of Mrs. LEMAIRE: "Miss Rivière is the daughter of an old and honorable soldier who fought in the great wars of the empire and who served under my father. It was for me a form of inheritance of the recommendation [] I am happy to give testimony to these interesting and virtuous young girls, who work to carry with dignity the obscure, but respected name of their old father "
