VERLAINE Paul (1844-1896). - Lot 236
VERLAINE Paul (1844-1896). Autograph poem signed "Paul Verlaine" with L.A.S., Hôpital Broussais December 1891, to AMAN-JEAN "artist-painter"; 2 pages in-12, envelope (traces of framing with partly browned paper). Poem of Verlaine to his painter. This sonnet was collected in 1894 in the new edition of Dédicaces. The painter Edmond AMAN-JEAN (1858-1936) left a beautiful portrait of Verlaine, sketched at the beginning of 1891 while Verlaine was staying at the Saint-Antoine hospital (Museum of Metz). The letter mentions a new posing session: "For the moment I am 'preying' on one of my friends who is going to 'pull' me. A matter of three short sessions. He will start on Monday. If therefore for in a dozen it is necessary to be ready, write and come "... On the 3rd page, the sonnet, titled: To the good painter Aman Jean, on a portrait, finally rested that he had made of me. "You took me in a moment of familiar calm Where the mask becomes as childish as again. Such I was, minus the beard and this forehead of head of calf Towards the year forty-eight, baby round, in Montpellier "...
