NERVAL Gérard de (1808-1855). - Lot 184
NERVAL Gérard de (1808-1855). L.A.S. "Gérard Labrunie", [Lille 23 May 1853], to Doctor LABRUNIE; 2 1/2 pages in-8, address (repaired split in address leaf). Letter to his father, on the return from his trip to Holland. "My dear Papa, I am getting closer, I am in Lille; the weather is very nice. I'm resting for a day, then I'll head for Arras. I hope you are taking a walk in this beautiful weather. I would not have left Holland so soon without the rains; but here the sea wind does not act anymore, the temperature is different. I always pass with emotion through this good city of Lille, thinking that you once contributed to the glory of its seat. There is a monument in the square, in front of the café from where I am writing to you, which celebrates the defense of Lille during the revolution. It is a fluted granite column, with bombs and howitzers on the pedestal, and at the top a bronze statue representing the heroic city. The houses of the square have not changed and are very curious with their cuttings and their festoons around the windows. There is going to be a big party at the beginning of next month, for which preparations are already being made, but I will not attend. I will go instead to the big archery festival in Creil, which takes place in three or four days, and I will then be very close to Paris. I drank wine here for the first time in a long time (except for a half bottle of 1F50 in Amsterdam). The food is also better in that you eat less and better. Spring is starting to appear in earnest and green wheat and rye are everywhere. I think I will find the summer, which has been so long awaited this year, even lower. It is neither hot nor cold here but very good. I fear nothing so much as the heavy sweating in humid countries; for in the south it is beneficial. But Paris is also a humid country. See you soon. I embrace you"... Œuvres complètes (Pléiade, ed. Pichois), t. II, p. 1305.
