Compass of marine or of road with dry tank out of brass and glass. Signed on the ring "Baradelle Lné A Paris". Printed paper dial, signed in the center of the rose fleurdelysée "Baradelle, au Quartier Anglois à Paris", with annular, silvered, graduated over-dial. With a removable measuring rule with slider, signed "Baradelle L'aîné A Paris". Diameter of the compass : 19.5 cm - Diameter of the gimbal : 23.7 cm. Split glass; some scratches and oxidation. In a square quadripod oak box with a lugged lid, two holding hooks and marker letters. H. 27.5 cm - Width : 30.5 cm - Depth : 30.5 cm. Scratches and shocks of use. Nicolas Alexandre BARADELLE (c. 1740-post. 1791), known as the Elder, "Engineer in Mathematical and Phisical Instruments, [active] in the English Quarter, Quay de l'Horloge du Palais, near the Cour de la Moignon. He makes Sextants and Octants, according to hadley [...], Azimuth and Course Compasses, and all Marine instruments". (from his engraved advertisement).
