[GOUNOD Charles]. GARNIER Charles (1825-1898).
5 L.A.S. "Charles Garnier" or "Carlo", [1878-1893], to Charles GOUNOD (the last to Madame); 1 page in-8 or in-4 each, mostly on the letterhead of the Ministère des Travaux publics. Agence des Travaux du Nouvel Opéra. Friendly correspondence from the architect of the Paris Opera to the musician. [1878]. He asks him to send him Cinq-Mars "with a little dedication note"... [July 1880]. "Amico mio, Charles Garnier is proud of Charles Gounod who can both sign Charles G. of the Opera! So that if you wear the cross of Grand Officer I can look at it and rejoice. But what upsets me is that I will not be the only one to be happy and that everyone else wants to applaud too. Finally, in a republic, you have to walk with the majority, and I walk with Caro Carlo. He is very happy: "It seems to me that I have even more reason to admire you and that I love you even more since you decorate our flag in this way. There are some artists that we must follow and that are our honour and I imagine that we are glorified when we make them shine a little more" .... May 1889. Autograph sonnet signed, Les Sillons : " When fall at the feet of the red azalea wheel "... Annotations and corrections by Gounod in blue pencil to set this sonnet to music. - Garnier reminds Gounod of his 'imprudent promise' to set his 'poor sonnet' to music: 'don't lose my little verses and make a work of them'... [October 1893]. Letter of condolences to Madame Gounod: " you know well enough the deep friendship that bound me to our Charles. I admired him as much as I cherished him and among all those who mourn him I am one of the most afflicted"... A photograph of Gustave EIFFEL by Dornac (oblong in-8 from the series Nos contemporains chez eux) is attached, plus a visiting card of Gustave Eiffel with an autograph line.
