Nice 28 December 1839, to Mme BOUSQUET, account of his trip to Rome. 21 January 1864, to Léon CARVALHO, about the difficulties in the performance of Mireille; he refuses to remove the scene of the Crau (which was beyond Mme Carvalho's abilities). He refuses to modify his work, and refuses to replace Mme Carvalho, whose "incomparable talent" he praises, by Mlle de Maësen: "this scene is moreover the pivot of my work, and I consider it to mark the dramatic level of the role [...] which loses its greatest character without it. If it must be transposed, let's transpose it: never delete it".
