AUTOGRAPHIC MUSICAL MANUSCRIPT for Le Tribut de Zamora, [1881]; oblong in-8 notebook (15 x 24 cm) of 42 pages (and a few blank sheets), purple hardback cover. Sketchbook for his opera. Le Tribut de Zamora, with libretto by Jules Brésil, was first performed at the Opéra on April 1, 1881 The manuscript is written in pencil on an oblong notebook with 6 lines. It includes the first draft of the entire final scene of Act II, here entitled "La Vente", i.e. the sale of the captives, where Manoël tries in vain to buy back his fiancée Xaïma. Along these 255 measures, noted on 3 staves (2 systems per page, on 11 sheets), Gounod noted the instrumental themes of the introduction and the conclusion, the lines of song with the words, and sketched the accompaniment; one notes important variations with the final version. The Cadi, Manoël, Ben-Saïd, Hadjar, Xaïma and the choir are involved here. Turning the booklet over, one finds various instrumental themes, noted on 2 staves over 11 leaves: Andante, Allegretto, Rhythm of 5 bars; (Arabian dance, nonchalant) Andante; "Ch. as the 2nd act"; Larghetto, Vivace (in 1 beat)..., with some indications of instrumentation. On a flyleaf, Gounod has made a count of the measures of the first two acts. A sketchbook for Cinq-Mars (after Alfred de Vigny's novel, premiered on April 5, 1877 at the Opéra-Comique) is attached in pencil on 13 pages of an oblong notebook made up of 6 half-sheets with 13 lines. One finds in particular the sketch of the aria of Cinq-Mars: " Amis? à notre cause sainte "... ; the chorus of the 3rd act: " La gaîté, la folie "... ; the " Chœur des Moines (1er acte) " ; the " Chœur des Pèlerins (2nd act) " ; the " Romance (C.M.) " of Cinq-Mars in the 4th act ; " Que Dieu nous donne la victoire " ; " Je ne suis qu'un pécheur " ; " Eh bien, donc? venez tous ". Gounod noted the vocal lines, with some sketches or motifs of accompaniment.
