Portrait of Elisabeth-Charlotte of Bavaria, Duchess of Orleans, (1652-1722), Princess Palatine of the Rhine. Oil on oval canvas. 66 x 54 cm. Framed, the frame with the keys has been removed. Accidents and restorations. Rectangular frame in wood and gilded plaster with an oval view and decorated with floral garlands and foliage in the escutcheons (chips and missing). Elisabeth-Charlotte of Bavaria, known as Princess Palatine or Madame, was born on May 27, 1652 at the castle of Heidelberg and died on December 8, 1722 at the castle of Saint-Cloud. She was Countess of Simmern and Princess Palatine, daughter of Count Elector Charles I Louis and Princess Charlotte of Hesse-Cassel. "Madame" was also the second wife of Philip of France and sister-in-law of Louis XIV, whom she admired. Her portrait in widow's clothing at the age of 61 by Rigaud has been copied many times by the studio.
