Jean-Antoine ROBERT. Pistol with loading by the breech. Octagonal damascus barrel. Striped. Calibre 13 mm. Marked in gold "PISTOLET ROBERT BREVETE A PARIS" on inlaid steel blade. Remainder of gilded thread with the mouth. Rising breechblock, engraved with foliage. Punched. Medallion in letters and gilded nets: "Gold medal. Exhibition of 1834. Academy of Industry. Society of Encouragement". Breech ring engraved with a leaf. The key signed DESNYAU and numbered 20 C.36. Selected walnut barrel with squared stock, oval pommel underlined by a frieze of leaves and with a carved shell on the nose. Cut iron fittings, engraved with scrolls, with trigger guard with finger rests and gilded E.L. number under closed crown. Tail of double trigger with adjustment by screw. Barrel length: 23.5 cm - Total length: 36 cm. Scratches, shocks and cracks to the barrel, broken in the middle; one trigger guard cheek missing, some pitting and oxidation, corroded pommel ornament. Jean-Antoine ROBERT, active in Paris between 1829 and 1840. Inventor of the common system of back loading for metal cartridges, based on the principle of Samuel PAULY. In 1832, the Belgian army carried out tests with this system and would have ordered 3 000 parts. In 1834, Robert receives the gold medal of the Academy of Industry. His workshop was at 6 rue Richet, his warehouse at 5 rue J.J. Rousseau and, from 1840, his shop was at 17 rue du Faubourg Montmartre.
