Pierre SOULAGES (1919)
3 autograph letters signed with 3 envelopes, 1957-1958 to Jean Leymarie; 7 pages, including 3 on the letterhead of the Trocadero Hotel Bangkok. Various formats. Paris 27 October 1957: "Dear Leymarie, After a bad flu which prevented me from doing it earlier I wanted to tell you how happy I was with your letter and with what you think of my painting. (...) On the other hand my wife and I are going to make a trip similar to yours - partly on the funds of the Windsor Foundation - we leave on the 8th for New York and will be back at the beginning of March after Japan, India etc..." ... Bangkok: "Dear Leymarie, I have been meaning to reply to your long and friendly letter for a long time now, and all the information you gave us has already been very useful - unfortunately for this trip, after these three months of absence during which I have not touched a brush, I am looking forward to getting back to painting. (...) We visited Japan in excellent conditions, the price I got attracted me obligations I would have done without but also opened many doors for me - (...) For the moment the greatest impression of this trip is the whole of Angkor from where we arrived and that we visited on your advice by jeep. Small folds, stains and tears to the envelopes.
