André MASSON (1896-1987) - Lot 52
André MASSON (1896-1987) 3 Typed letters signed with handwritten corrections (4 pages), 4 postcards signed and one card signed, 1946-1973 to Jean Leymarie; various sizes. Kervilahouen July 30, 1946: "Dear friend, here I am in this hamlet illustrated by Monet's stay. I bathe in his "motifs" and my faith the corner was well chosen! "Vouneuil-sous-Biard, September 8, 1947: "Dear Leymarie, I always have great pleasure in reading you. I thank you for your last good letter. I regret that we were not able to do our little stained glass tour together. You are right in speaking of Tintoretto: his genius has never ceased - never ceases - to haunt me. But like a poor traveller before a mountain! Rembrandt, what I studied in him, are precisely his washes that you are a thousand times right to love. I admire his painting absolutely, but he is a skinner... "Aix-en-Provence, November 15, 1948: "(...) I think that, as we have already said, painting is dying from too many "artistic" intentions. We had reached the point where we were only making art with art. And with all that, we don't go beyond the craft. The reproach of virtuosity which is also made with an unpleasant intention, makes me laugh. It proves that I am against the tide, because I find it resolutely idiotic, if not to be clumsy (that's a misfortune), then to pretend to be clumsy. Infantilism, false primitivism and exoticism on which you rightly place the emphasis, that's what we must get rid of at all costs... " etc. Folds, stains and tears.
