Alberto GIACOMETTI (1901-1966) - Lot 45
Alberto GIACOMETTI (1901-1966) Important correspondence. 11 autograph letters signed, 9 of which with envelopes, 1947-1958 to Constant Rey-Millet; 47 pages on 13 double and one single sheet. Stampa February 4, 1948: "I have finally received news of the exhibition, it is open since the 19th. Matisse says that it is very good and he has sent me a beautiful catalogue with many reproductions, Sartre's text, a small text-letter from me and drawings. He tells me that the critics have been foolish, especially because of Sartre's presence (he has written a long text that I like very much and Matisse likes it too). He also says that the public does not yet know what to think of my work, which seems to me to be very understandable... "Paris 28 February 1958: "My dear Rey-Millet (...) I was never in a state to write, or tired or in a bad mood, I started too many things and I can no longer find a moment's respite, especially because I am always next to what I want, I would like to go quickly; I go to bed in the morning happy with what I've done, I get up at 2 o'clock and nothing is as I imagined, there is never more than small progress or I thought I had made huge steps forward ... "Paris, August 30, 1951: "Right away about the litho. I do it with pleasure and you don't have to be confused by your insistence as you say! but not at all. But what to do? I would like you to give me a subject or an idea of possible subjects which you think would go best... "Paris, February 21, 1958: "Dear Rey-Millet, I have written to you mentally countless times, I don't know why I haven't actually done so, as if you were too close to write to you (...) I have been impatient to write to you since the moment I saw all the drawings at x Galerie de L'Elysée. Nothing for a long time has given me such pleasure, they are marvellous, wonderful, one more beautiful than the other, the ones in colour and the three in pencil, infinitely further than anything you have done in the past"... Paris, August 4, 1958: "Dear friends, Since my return here and especially since I received the drawings I want to write to you and I do not know what always prevents me from doing immediately what I want to do, it is never possible. However, I wanted to tell you right away my great pleasure in receiving the two drawings that I like very much and that at the same time remind me of all those that we looked at together with Jean in the studio, which were all new to me, and they also remind me of the paintings that I looked at as if for the first time and that I now see again before my eyes as if I were still in the studio the other morning... " Small folds, stains and tears to the wrappers.
