Provenance:
According to family tradition, this carpet adorned a castle in Belgium at the end of the 19th and in the first half of the 20th century.
After the sale of this castle, its owner had then given this carpet to one of her French friends.
It has remained in her descendants to this day.
Bibliography:
Tapis d'Empire, Models from the Marmottan Collection, Ville de Boulogne-Billancourt/Bibliothèque Marmottan, Norma Editions, Paris, 2003, p. 12 tapis Coll. A. Deroyan; p. 31 n° 14 notice; p. 39 n° 14 maquette.
The ornamental composition of our woven rug is a fairly faithful reproduction of the quarter drawing, in gouache on cardboard, of the maquette (17.6 x 18.1 cm) [Inv. 70-333] of a "lyre carpet, trophies and horn of plenty, helmet in the corner", dated around 1810, contained in an album of models - or maquettes - of carpets from the Manufacture Piat LEFEBVRE et Fils de Tournai, kept in the Marmottan Museum.
This drawing has been reproduced, with those of the album, in the book, published on the occasion of the exhibition on the Carpets of Empire at the Marmottan Library between 23 October 2003 and 31 January 2004.
Most of the carpet models in this album are attributed to the official draftsman of the Imperial Furniture, Jacques-Louis de LA HAMAYDE de SAINT-ANGE (1780-1860), but not that of our carpet.
The author of this drawing is, to date, not identified.
Is it Jacques-Louis de LA HAMAYDE de SAINT-ANGE, the architect Bruno RENARD or the Tournai designer PLATEAU, also active at the Tournai Manufacture?
The dating of this carpet, around 1810-1814, is between the period of realization of the drawing initially conceived for the Manufacture de Piat Lefebvre et Fils and the end of the First Empire.
