Signed autograph letter addressed to Paul ÉLUARD Brussels, December 4, 1941, 2 pages in?4 in ink on paper. Paul Éluard and René Magritte met in 1927, when Magritte lived in the Paris region until 1930. He then frequented the French Surrealists including Breton, Éluard, Jean Arp and the painter Joan Miró. This letter was written in 1941. Magritte was happy that, despite "the situation", Éluard was still able to publish his books, including Le Livre ouvert published in 1941. "My dear Paul, I have received your poems and the "Choice of Poems". You really are a great painter. And I'm proud to be your friend. I am pleased to see that despite the "situation" the necessary editing of your work continues regularly. My fatigue crisis is almost over (I think it will never end) and I have been working with interest for some time. Without doubt I had to find a way to realize what was bothering me: paintings where the "beautiful side" of life would be the field I would exploit. By this I mean all the traditional paraphernalia of charming things, women, flowers, birds, trees, the atmosphere of happiness, etc. I've been working for some time now with interest. And I have managed to renew the air of my painting, it is a rather powerful charm that now replaces in my paintings the disturbing poetry that I had once strived to achieve. Basically, it is pleasure that removes a whole series of concerns that I want to ignore more and more. To make you see better what I would like to see, I remind you of "Black Magic" which was in my old things a starting point for this search for pleasure.
