GAUGUIN Paul (1848-1903)
Signed autograph letter addressed to Camille PISSARRO Copenhagen, [1885], 4 pages in-4 in ink on headed squared paper (stains, folds, marginal tears, missing in the lower part of the pages without alteration of the text). Important autograph letter signed to Camille Pissarro in which Gauguin shows himself discouraged and bitter. He is in Denmark, his wife's homeland, where he finds it very difficult to sell his work: "[...] ask Durand Ruel to take something from me at any price to buy colours". He is confronted with social and artistic opprobrium: "[...] the academy has given the word of order to the framers who sell paintings, and they all obey, to do nothing for me, not even a frame! My children are not baptized and nobody wants to have anything to do with an excommunicated person. (I am not exaggerating.) ". He comments on his series of paintings made in Rouen and begins a diatribe against the art dealers and especially Madame Latouche: "[...] it is not necessary to give my address to Mad. Latouche, however, I don't care about her as I do about Colin [...] She intends to live off artists without ever giving them support [...]". Throughout his life, Gauguin had a complex relationship with the art world and its dealers. This letter is one of the best examples of this and best reflects this aspect of the painter's personality.
