GAUGUIN Paul (1848-1903)
Autograph letter signed addressed to Camille PISSARRO [Paris], January 04, 1882, 3 pages in-8 in ink on "Agence financière des Assurances" letterhead, under chocolate half-marocco, gold titled spine, portrait of Gauguin inserted. (Folds and slight stains). Intrigued by Pissarro's withdrawal from the art scene, Gauguin encouraged him to change his mind: "Your letter is a riddle to me; I no longer understand what is going on in Pontoise; you think you are able to withdraw into your hole and reappear afterwards, you are wrong. "Degas can talk about it at his ease, because he does not withdraw into his hole at all, his reputation is made and is not to be made, he has his world to support him and even the academy he is joking about is ready to reach out to him. Tomorrow he should go to the salon immediately or open the doors to acclaim him [...]". "Someone like Delacroix, however, has done a lot of research on his own, but you must realize that except for the means, the colouring etc., he has not been able to find the right solution. Delacroix after all remained the painter of before in his compositions. There is indeed a look to him, he is a man of genius... ». "I cannot decide to remain all my life in finance and amateur painter. I put in my head that I will become a painter... ».
