MAISON ALPHONSE GIROUX, à Paris - Lot 162
MAISON ALPHONSE GIROUX, à Paris Rectangular cassette in rosewood veneer with decoration of braiding in reserves, with a lid in cavet centered of a plate of Italian pietra dura (cornelian and steatites of colors) with decoration of a bird among cherries. Rich ormolu or patinated ormolu ornamentation, such as: openwork corner consoles, bases, angular cartouches with oval floral mosaics in glass or coloured stones, keyhole, feet in the shape of winged chimeras. Engraved and gilded lock, signed "Alph. Giroux in Paris". Interior stretched in burgundy velvet, engraved and gilded hinges. Circa 1850-1860. Height: 20.5 cm - Length: 34 cm - Depth: 24.5 cm. A few cracks, accidents, mosaics missing and restored, oxidation, locks to be refixed, bronze and velvet wear. Feet in chimeras possibly brought back, because of old fixing holes underneath. François Simon Alphonse GIROUX (1776-1848) ran an art supplies and toys shop and a workshop for tableware, furniture and luxury items, reusing precious materials (lacquer, porcelain, hard stones...). This production is intended for a bourgeois and aristocratic clientele, notably the royal family of France during the Restoration. In 1838, his two sons, Alphonse-Gustave (1810-1886) and André (1801-1879), took over the company and developed it under the name "Alphonse GIROUX et Cie".
