H.W. MORTIMER & Co, London Gunmaker to His Majesty. Officer's flintlock pistol. Lock with remains of engraved frieze and swan-necked hammer, with round bodies. Round barrel, with very faded markings. Engraved foliage on the thunder tail. Smooth. Caliber 16 mm. Proof mark [GP] and quality mark [V] crowned with LONDON. Walnut shaft with dark patina, squared stock and pommel in melon ribs. Cut and engraved iron fittings. Barrel length: 22.5 cm - Total length: 35 cm. Without rod. Cleaned weapon. Spring blocked armed. Oxidation and corrosion to the metal parts; rear trigger guard clip missing; scratches, bumps and chips to the wood, especially around the lock, to be reattached. Harvey Walklate MORTIMER, harquebusier active in London between 1782 and 1813. Residing at 89 Fleet Street, he was appointed ordinary armourer to King George III from 1783. He associated with his brother T. MORTIMER around 1790 [probably corresponding to the "& Co"], then with his brother and his son Harvey Walklate II MORTIMER from 1800 to 1806, then only with his son between 1806 and 1813.
