Jules cardinal MAZARIN (1602-1661)
L.A.S. "Le Cardl Mazarini" (partly autograph), at the camp of Balahan 8 January 1653, to Henri de Loménie, Count of BRIENNE, Secretary of State and Commands of His Majesty; 3 pages petit in-4 (the first half dictated to a secretary), address with red wax stamps to the arms on pink silk lakes. Towards the end of the Fronde des Princes, less than a month before Mazarin's return to Paris. He thanks him for his letter of the 24th; the Count must have received the letter in which he expressed his thoughts concerning M. d'Angoulême and Portugal. "As far as Italian affairs are concerned, it would be difficult for me to be concerned in the trouble I am in, that I could speak with the application that it would be necessary to speak about such important matters. I will take what their Matés and the Council think is appropriate to do on what can be done in the most urgent matters, and as I hope to have the honour of being with them soon, if I can get there in time to express my feelings, I will do so...". He adds with his hand, after having received a dispatch from the 2nd: "I have nothing to reply to what has been resolved for Portugal and for what concerns Rome and Mr. de Valancay. I shall return to speak to you about this on my return, but the said Ambassador must leave no stone unturned to establish a good correspondence with Cardinal Ponfilio, assuring him that the Pope will indeed testify to Father Aman's feelings towards the Holy King. He will find in His Majesty all the scruples he desires. I believe that their M.M. should no longer delay the grace which they have resolved to bestow on the Ambassadors of the Duke of Savoy, being sorely needed for so many reasons, and on my return we shall work to put the affairs of war in order that the progress of the enemies may be arrested with ease, it will be good that you should take the trouble to say a word of this to myr Prince Thomas so that Madame Royalle and M. Ste. le Duc de Savoye voyant que le dit Prince agit utilement aupres de leur M.M. pour leur service se disposer dautautant plus a une perfecte reunion avec luy"...
