Sale of an exceptional Picasso dish to coincide with Sophie Calle's exhibition, À toi de faire, ma mignonne, at the Musée national Picasso - Paris
Reasons for the sale
"In Picasso's personal archives at the museum, I found a letter on the letterhead of the AAAA, Association d'aide aux artistes aveugles, asking Picasso for an original drawing of the blind man as he saw him, to be used to build the Maison des yeux clos with the proceeds from the sale. I didn't get a reply from Picasso. I appealed to the generosity of Almine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, to offer at auction a ceramic by Pablo Picasso that they had donated and thus, sixty-five years later, offer part of the proceeds of the sale to the Book of the Blind."

Le Livre de L'Aveugle was created in 1917 to help the war-blind. Once peace had returned, it gradually specialized in the transcription and publication of school books in Braille for blind children.
Today, these books cover all grades, from primary to secondary, and some even cover university studies.
The association, under the law of 1901, is made up of volunteers and has been recognized as a public utility since 1930. It has been recognized by the Académie française.
Our mission is to enable blind children to follow a normal education. To do this, they need the same textbooks as their classmates, but transcribed into Braille. In France, the public service is unable to meet all the orders for Braille transcriptions of school books. That's why our association, founded in 1917, has set itself the mission of ensuring this work, thanks to volunteer transcribers/adaptors. Schools, teachers, families, institutes and blind parents are all involved, and nearly 1,000 people in France and abroad, from nursery schools to universities, regularly use the Livre de l'Aveugle.
