PIEDAGNEL (actif au XIXème siècle) - Lot 31
PIEDAGNEL (actif au XIXème siècle) Boarding and capture of the English brig "Carnation" commanded by M. Grégory, post-Captain, by the French brig "Le Palinure", commanded by M. Pierre-François Jance, Capitaine de Frégate, under the First Empire [October 3, 1808 off La Martinique]. Ink wash drawing on paper. Signed lower right "Piedagnel fecit". Text describing the scene with the names of the sailing ships, the number and caliber of cannons (17 carronades and 2 cannons vs. 14 carronades and 2 cannons), the number of crew (117 vs. 80 men) and the names and ranks of the captains. 27 x 46 cm (drawing). Drawing partially unstained and with some wetness, and text unstained. Both papers with old restored tears. Gilded frame in molded wood and plaster pearl frieze (wear and small chips). - The brig La Palinure was launched in Lorient in January 1804 and sailed in early 1805 under the command of Lieutenant Jance. Her logbooks for the periods An XIV (1805)-end 1806 and 1808 are held by the Archives du Service Historique de la Défense [Rochefort, MR 3 E 2 524; MR 3 E 1 385]. Captain de Frégate Pierre-François Jance died of yellow fever, which had been tormenting him, the day after his capture. - The brig Carnation was launched in 1807. The French crew burned her in February 1809 to prevent her being taken over by the English. Her logbook, following her capture on October 3, covering the period from October 5, 1808 to January 31, 1809, is held by the Archives du Service Historique de la Défense [Rochefort, MR 3 E 1 401]. A black lithograph by P.C. CAUSSE, published in Nantes by Henri-Désiré CHARPENTIER, showing a similar view, but with the ships slightly offset, before the boarding, is kept at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London [24.5 x 31.4 cm / Inv. PAD5774]. The date of this naval battle is given below the lithograph, and the location in the museum's notice.
